With all of the extra handwashing this year I thought it would be a good time to lean in and do a post on moisturizing. Many of us think about our face when it comes to moisturizing but neglect everything else. Today we're going to explore a few different options from The Butters Hygienics Co. and how layering can be beneficial.
Complete Care Lip Balm
One of the most often forgotten elements of skincare is our lips! It often seems like people fall into two categories with this one. You either have a favorite lip balm and keep backups, or you buy a random tube at the store if you need it. I fall in the first category and always seem to have a few "active" tubes floating around.
The Butters Hygenics Co. Complete Care Lip Conditioning Balm was a surprise bonus in my pr package. I didn't pick this item to feature, but I was quite excited to try it out. I put their lip balm into my rotation making it the primary balm I used about 90% of the time over the course of three weeks. Over that time this has easily worked its way into my favorite balm rotation. It's soft and goes on easily, and doesn't require constant reapplication. I find that I only need to reapply if I'm drinking a ton of water/tea otherwise it stays put for hours.
The website says to compare it to Burt's Bees but I think that's a knock in what a wonderful product The Butters created with this product. Don't get me wrong, I was a long time Burt's fan but then I fell in love with balms that weren't so waxy. The big difference in this formula is that it starts with a cocoa and shea butter base which makes it ultra smooth. Add in other nourishing ingredients like calendula, apricot kernel, jojoba, and vitamin e and you have a well rounded, soothing product.

Healing Balm for Scars, Wounds, and Tattoos
This is a jar of gold. Seriously. That may seem like a ridiculous statement, but when you struggle with dry, cracked hands you cling to products that make them feel better. The Butters Hygienics Co. Healing Balm for Scars, Wounds, and Tattoos is a lifesaver for anyone with dry skin or eczema. The formula is dense but quickly melts in warm hands. Less is more with this as a little goes a long way. I found that using a dime sized amount provides good coverage for both hands. This formula is naturally scented with no added scents which makes it great for anyone with scent sensitivities. It smells earthy but not overwhelmingly so.
While trying out the Healing Balm for Scars, Wounds, and Tattoos I found that applying 1-3 times a day was the sweet spot for me. On days where I spend a lot of time in the garden, doing dishes, or deadlifting I used it more than an average day. If you told me I could only have one item from this post, this would easily be my top choice.

Organic Aloe Vera Gel
This is my first pick if I need moisture when I know I have to touch a lot of things (keyboard, phone, etc). The best part is that you can use aloe from head to toe. It can be used to smooth split ends, as a lightweight face moisturizer, or wherever you wish to quickly soothe dry skin. Aloe vera allergies are quite rare, so it's a safe option for most people.

The Butters Hygienics Co. Satsuma Guava Aloe x Shea Body Moisturizer is a medium weight moisturizer packed with a ton of great ingredients. The texture is similar to The Body Shop body butters without the high price tag.

Now that you've (hopefully) read everything let's talk about what you can do if you have ultra dry skin. I'm a huge fan of layering products for my facial skincare routine, and have adopted this method for my hands as well. For any layering situation I start with the lightest formula and then work my way to the heaviest over the course of an hour or two. In this instance I started with the Organic Aloe Vera Gel, followed up with a small amount of the Satsuma Guava Aloe x Shea Body Moisturizer, and then finished it all off with the Healing Balm for Scars, Wounds, and Tattoos. Build each layer slowly so that you can allow previous layers to sink in. Layering products isn't required, but I find that it gives me an extra boost when I really need it.
