Spell Polish Review

Thursday, June 19, 2014

Hey guys! I am back with a new-to-me indie called Spell Polish. I hadn't heard anything about the brand beyond seeing it once on Instagram. After talking with Heather a bit, I thought it would be nice to get to know more about her and her brand. Here's a little Q & A:

What was the inspiration behind Spell Polish?

I actually used to bite my nails for years, but I loved nail polish so much that it inspired me to stop. My collection grew very large and I wanted to be able to create custom colors. I chose the name Spell because I wanted something connoting magic and class... and I wanted to remind women that they have the power to change their lives (Spell yourself well...).

If you could recommend just one color in your line up, which one would you pick and why?

The most fun part of making nail polish is seeing which colors people choose- I'm often so surprised. I have a hard time recommending a particular color but I would definitely try a glow in the dark polish because they're just so much fun! Plus you can see your nails around the clock... even if you wake up in the middle of the night =)

Do you have any non-polish hobbies?

I love to draw, sew, swim and spend hours in my garden. I'm really trying to read more this year. I also spend a lot of time with my 3 dogs and 2 cats, and my awesome boyfriend Eric who tried to make anything possible.

True Love's Divine is a glitter topper made up of holographic glitter dots, and various sizes and shapes of red glitter. Pictured above is one coat applied in a gradient. The formula was nice and kept the glitter well suspended, but it had a really strong smell that gave me a headache. I love the color, but was not a fan of the suspension base used.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun is a glow-in-the-dark, neon that is slightly textured. In order the photos show the polish without a top coat, with a top coat, and how it would appear in a dark room. The formula on this was thick, but I was able to work with it and achieve full coverage with two coats. The glow is absolutely incredible. This is the best glow in the dark polish I've ever had the pleasure of wearing. Most glow-in-the-dark colors I swatch have to be worn for hours out in the sun before they hold enough of a charge for photos. I didn't charge this at all when I noticed the glow. If you are searching for the perfect glow-in-the-dark polish, this is it!

It Was Written In the Stars is an iridescent glitter topper made up of various sizes of hexagons and circles. Pictured above is one coat over Sinful Colors- Mint Apple. The formula was nice and did an excellent job of suspending glitter, but it also had a stinky base.

I am personally not a fan of the stronger suspension bases. I spoke with Heather about the suspension base after swatching these. She said that she was considering another base. What do you prefer? Would you be ok with needing to shake your glitters thoroughly before use, or are you willing to deal with the stronger scented base if it meant the glitter stayed suspended? I would love to hear your feedback!

In all, I loved all of the colors (and many more in her shop), but I wasn't able to work with the stronger suspension base.

  1. I am normally pretty sensitive to smells, but it seems like polish is not as bad for me for some reason. That said, there are colors that I can't use because of the smell. I would definitely rather shake and roll a bottle than get a headache from the base.

It Was Written In the Stars is really pretty! Great choice on the undies, too. It looks perfect over the minty green!
